Competition Categories & Definitions

Al Categories Are Judged by Definitions Below

All categories below are divided into both Painted and Natural except categories 1 and 11.

PAINTED: Any entry with more than one colored finish applied. Also any entry with a single color (paint, stain, or any pigment) applied that conceals the wood grain.

NATURAL: Any entry with no finish, a clear finish or one pigmented stain or wax that does not conceal the wood grain where it is applied. No painting.

  • 1.SHOW THEME - ANYTHING TOM WOLFE
  • 2. ANIMALS - Realistic, exactly proportioned wood carvings of animals carved in the round. Examples: deer, fox, raggit, etc.
  • 2-A. Animal Single
  • 2;B. Animal Groups - Two (2) or more subjects on the same base.
  • 3. FISH AND SEA MAMMALS - Realistic exactly proportioned wood carvings of fish and sea mammals, carved in the round. Examples: Sharks, Whales, Trout, Bass, Perch, etc.
  • 4. REPTILES - Realistic exactly proportioned wood carvings of snakes, turtles, lizards, and alligators, etc.
  • 5. HUMAN FIGURES - Realistic exactly proportioned wood carvings of human male, female or child carved in the round.
  • 6. CARICATURES - Realistic exactly proportioned wood carvings of carved in the round.
  • 7. STYLIZED CARVINGS - Realism is not the objective. Sugject retains identity with minimal detail.
  • 8. MINIATURES - Any style of subject. Carving and habitat (base) must fit completely inside a 2-inch cube.
  • 9. LARGE CARVINGS -Any carving over 36" in any dimension, including the base.
  • 10. SANTA CLAUS - Includes all Santa's, modern, old world, realistic, stylized, caricatures & primitive.
  • NOT USED IN 2021 -
  • 12. RELIEF CARVING - Engravings carved in the front of flat wooden surfaces. The back should be left un-carved.
  • 13. CHIP CARVINGS - A series of precise, regular, triangular or wedge shaped chips of wood to form an engraving lower than the wood surfaces.
  • 14. BUSTS - Includes head and partial shoulder of REALISTIC human male, female, or child realistically carved in the round.
  • 15. WOOD SPIRIT FACES - Human-like faces carved in the outer surface of a tree trunk, limb, branch or know.
  • 16. PYROGRAPHY - Art created with burning tools and equipment on wood.
  • 17. PREHISTORIC, MYTHICAL & FANTASY - Includes avatars, story book, dinosaurs, etc.
  • 18. RELIGIOUS FIGURES & SYMBOLS - Includes praying hands, cross, Buddah, Bible, etc.
  • 19. COTTONWOOD BARK - Any carving made exclusively from cottonwood bark.
  • 20. CTORESS KNEE - Must be complete cypress knee. Any subject or stule with NO ATTACHED OR GLUED additions allowed.
  • 21. FOUND WOOD - "Carved" Wood in its natural habitat. Examples: driftwood, stumps, roots, weathered post, wood knots, tree limbs & brnches.
  • 22. SPOON - Any size of subject. No groups. Decorative or utilitarian.
  • 23. WALKING STICKS AND CANES - Decorated by relief or in-the-round.
  • 24. ORNAMENTS - Includes Christmas tree ornaments, but may also include ornaments carved to celebrate other holidays as well.
  • 25. SONG BIRDS - Realistic, exactly proportioned wood carvings of song & perching birds, carved in the round. Examples:ribins, wrens, chickadees, woodpeckers, etc.
  • 26. GAME BIRDS - Realistic, exactly proportioned wood carvings of birds hunted for sport for food, carved in the round. Examples: chicken, turkey, quail, etc.
  • 27. BIRDS OF PREY - Realistic, exactly proportioned wood carvings of wading and swimming birds, carved in the round. Examples: hawks, falcons, owls, eagles, etc.
  • 28. SHOREBIRDS - Realistic, exactly proportioned wood carvings of wading and swimming birds, carved in the round. Examples: gulls, plovers, sandpipers, stilts, snipes, etc.
  • 29. DUCKS - Realistic, exactly proportioned wood carvings ofducks, carved in the round. Examples: mallards, gadwalls, wigeons, canvasbacks, wood ducks, etc.
  • 30. GEESE & SWANS - Realistic, exactly proportioned wood carvings of geese and swans, carved in the round. Examples: Canada geese, swans.
  • 30. MISC. BIRDS - Realistic, exactly proportioned wood carvings of birds, carved in the round, and not included in the above bird descriptions.
